What is Action Learning?
At its simplest, Action Learning could be described as facilitated peer mentoring. It is a method of collaborative learning where a small group (a 'set') meet regularly to tackle real problems or opportunities using skilled questioning and feedback. By working in a group, members gain different perspectives of their problem, explore alternatives and take action. The facilitator supports set members to “hear their own story differently”. Members learn not only about different possibilities in the situation, but also about the way they think, act and relate to others.
Background
Action Learning was established in the 1940's by Reg Revans at the National Coal Board. It grew from an idea to recreate the benefits of scientific research practice where colleagues share and compare problems, ideas and solutions. Revans transferred these methods to management and organisational development. Since then, a large body of practice and research has developed (both nationally and internationally) with Action Learning being used widely in all sectors.
When can Action Learning be useful?
- when in a new job, or in a role that is changing
- to find ways to improve a service delivery
- to introduce a large project
- when facing major challenges
- to test out new ways of working
- as part of a programme of learning
- during organisational change
What are the benefits of being in an Action Learning set?
- increased interpersonal skills
- new insights and strategies
- giving and receiving support and challenge
- a process where people learn through, and with, each other
- gaining skills to continue as a self facilitated set beyond the involvement of the facilitator
What does an Action Learning facilitator do?
- create safety for the set members to explore sensitive issues
- keep the group focus on the presenter and on the process
- hold the balance of support and challenge, taking the group beyond superficial analysis
- encourage an honest exchange of constructive feedback and review
Working with ‘sponsoring’ organisations
Action Learning is best understood ‘in action’ and an introductory workshop can be useful, both as part of the decision making process and to the success of the group learning process. I can also assist with defining the learning outcomes, guidance on set membership, designing a programme, and establishing the criteria for success.
